Summer 2005

A Vision Fulfilled

On October 8, 2003 the community rejoiced at the opening of the Maxwell and Irene Dison Johnson Cultural Park located at 322 South Clara Ave., DeLand, FL.

The Amphitheater located in the Park was named the Noble "Thin Man" Watts Amphitheater in honor of the local world renown saxophonist, Noble Watts.

In May 2004, the first Noble "Thin Man" Watts Jazz Festival was held at the Cultural Park with over 400 people in attendance. Although the late Dr. Watts was ill at the time, he was able to be present with his wife, June B. Watts, and his daughter Natalie Watts Brown.

Special Thanks

The AMMA is grateful to all who financial contributions to the creation of the Cultural Park and the construction of the Amphitheater. The cost of the entire project was $396,000. The major contributor was Volusia Country 2002 ECHO Program (Environment, Cultural, Historic and Outdoors). Other contributors were the Federal Community Development Block Grant Program, State of Florida, City of DeLand, Bank of America, Bright House Networks, and many more generous contributors.
